  43. like one of the millions of sheep who believe the TV media and the lying
  44. president and secretary of the treasury when they tell you the firearms
  45. they're trying to ban are used disproportionately in crime, are "the choice

  98. Many ARRL volunteers in Florida were surprised last week 
  99. to learn that Luck Hurder KY1T had been was fired from his 
  100. position as Deputy Field Services Manager at ARRL. This job 
  101. brought him into frequent contact with Amateurs all over the 
  102. country. He was one of the people at ARRL HQ who nearly always 
  103. answered his mail promptly and could be counted on to do 
  104. exactly as he promised. With his permission, given by telephone 
  105. this date, here is his own explanation.

  109. Email from Luck Hurder 17 April 1994 to W4MLE and WA4PUP:

  111. "Those of you who know me well will immediately understand why 
  112. I couldn't possibly abide by what follows, but for the record, 
  113. my final conversation with Rick Palm was to the effect that yes,
  114. I would in fact abide by everything contained therein, PROVIDED
  115. that each and every ARRL HQ employee be asked to sign a similar 
  116. document. They declined. Rick's last words to ME were, `then you 
  117. give me no alternative but to terminate your employment'.

  122. Here is the text of what Rick Palm wanted Hurder to sign:

  124. "FINAL WARNING
  125.  
  126. "The problem of Mr. Hurder's external communications has been 
  127. called to his attention before (see attached memoranda, for 
  128. example)*, so this is nothing new. The inappropriate content, 
  129. and tone of Mr. Hurder's communications have continued and 
  130. have been damaging to the organization. 
  131.  
  132. "Poor judgment leading to these inappropriate communications 
  133. has served to reduce the credibility of the organization with 
  134. members and volunteers. 
  135.  
  136. "The most recent situation, as documented in the attached, 
  137. regards the repeated inappropriate dissemination of internal 
  138. policy through electronic communications, and inappropriate 
  139. communications with field volunteers.**  The organization will 
  140. not tolerate any further instances of this behavior. 
  141.  
  142. "The addendum Mr. Hurder appended to an e-mail message presented 
  143. publicly, in an inappropriate manner, an internal business 
  144. policy, despite Mr. Hurder's opportunity to discuss the policy 
  145. as a member of the management team at a manager's meeting a 
  146. week earlier. The policy was communicated succinctly to Mr. 
  147. Hurder at that time,*** and was followed up in a written 
  148. memorandum to all staff a week later. 
  149.  
  150. "To help the organization rectify the instant situation, Mr. 
  151. Hurder must: 
  152.  
  153. "1. Issue an apology (approved by the undersigned in advance 
  154. of release) to the subject correspondents and any other 
  155. correspondent who received the addendum. Additionally, an 
  156. apology (approved by the undersigned in advance of release) 
  157. must be issued to the affected Director(s). 
  158.  
  159. "2.  Refrain from commenting externally on this, or any, 
  160. internal business policy. 
  161.  
  162. "3.  Refrain from issuing inappropriate and potentially 
  163. destructive communications externally again. 
  164.  
  165. "4.  Conduct his correspondence so that it will not come to the 
  166. point where the organization is forced to review every piece of 
  167. outgoing mail to ensure its integrity. If this happens, then it 
  168. will be deemed that he is unsuitable for the position of Deputy 
  169. Manager. 
  170.  
  171. "5.  Failure to comply with all of the above will result in 
  172. immediate termination of employment."

  180. "were about 10 pages of gripes from directors about my `bad 
  181. attitude'" as it related to board actions.

  185. the appropriate ARRL director. "On email, I tacked on a 
  186. disclaimer saying please be aware that a copy of this is going 
  187. to your elected ARRL Director, and quoted a staff edict saying 
  188. failing to do this would result in a poor annual review.

  190. "Most email messages I handled every day had no indication of 
  191. where the message came from, hence no clue to which was the 
  192. `appropriate director.' I asked Rick how to tell which one. 
  193. And he said `that's already been discussed,' but wouldn't tell 
  194. me the outcome of the discussion."

  235. Regarding the bugcatchers, there are a few varieties it seems.

  237. Any differences between the style with the capacitance hat
  238. and the style without?  Also, the dude from Texas Antennas (?)
  239. at Dayton pointed out that their model with the little coil
  240. at the bottom (besides the monster coil in the middle), allowed
  241. a much larger 2:1 swr range on 80 (and 40?).  Any experiences?

  258. issue of the British publication "Practical Wireless."
  259. Remember as you read it that "football" in England
  260. means "soccer" in the U.S.

  269. Did you know that fans at football matches are Morse 
  270. experts?  Well I didn't either until Mike Stott G0NEE 
  271. told me.  Apparently, if you listen to the shouts and 
  272. the clapping, one of the clapping sequences is:

  277. This, as you can see represents 73 in Morse.  After some
  278. investigation Mike has come up with the facts.  It all
  279. started just after the start of the Second World War and 
  280. the earliest date of its use that he can find was in the 
  281. winter of 1940.

  283. This was used by the fans as a way of sending "Best Wishes"
  284. to their football team.  Morse code was used because at 
  285. that time a large number of the general public could read 
  286. and send Morse code - not only from its use in being a 
  287. member of the armed forces but also in every day from the 
  288. youth organisations at the time!  So now you know.
